I don’t usually go to a restaurant shortly after they open as they need to get the kinks out and settle into a flow. Well, that changed as I went to a restaurant that has been open for only 10 days, but they are owned by the same people who have a restaurant nearby called ReBirth which has proven to be one of the better ones in New Orleans.
Galliano calls themselves Southern Casual Dining and if you look at the photo of the interior you will see why. It’s very rustic and makes you feel like you are in Cajun Country. Galliano’s has only one Gumbo on the menu and it’s a Chicken and Andouille Gumbo with okra which is served in a small Cajun kettle for only $8.00. I give them great props for the kettle and greater props for what was inside. This is a dark roux gumbo with plenty of andouille and chicken. It was served hot, had a very good Gumboroma, seasoned perfectly and had THE BEST after burn I’ve had since I’ve been critiquing Louisiana Gumbos. I actually didn’t want to eat anything else as I wanted to savor the after burn. When I saw the gumbo on the menu and it said it has okra in it, I was ready to write that the gumbo was slimy. Nay, nay. The okra was cooked down to where the slime was gone. Kudos to the chef. One other thing that was a plus was the rice. It was seasoned rice that had a very good taste and was served hot.
As for the rest of the menu, you will find some of the great Louisiana comfort foods such as Southern fried catfish, Southern fried chicken, breaded pork chops, and believe it or not, a country fried filet mignon. All entrees come with the side of your choice. My choice was the Cajun “Dirty” Rice with poor man’s gravy. This was some of the best dirty rice I’ve eaten.
