Located just a few minutes from the Louis Armstrong International Airport, you will find this very local restaurant that serves up some of the freshest seafood around. Being a local restaurant may mean they treat visitors like outsiders, but that’s not the case here. It was my first time and it felt like I was one of the family.
The only Gumbo on their menu is a Louisiana Seafood Gumbo. $5.50 for a cup and $7.50 for a bowl. You can also have a combo of a half Po-Boy and Gumbo for $10.50.
Harbor Seafood serves a very thick seafood gumbo which had crunchy pieces of okra and a few crab shells. This was the first restaurant that I’ve come across that serves their Gumbo with a Gumbo Spoon. A Gumbo Spoon is almost round, as you will see in the photo, where most (soup) spoons are oval. I wasn’t a big fan of the Gumbo Spoon as it barely fit in my mouth and I have a big mouth. Back to the Seafood Gumbo. There were several oysters in the seafood gumbo but they were over cooked and rubbery. There were several very small shrimp. It did have a good gumboroma, good seasoning and a very good after burn. The rice had no taste.
I chose the combo with a shrimp po-boy. That was the best part of my meal. Plenty of fresh Louisiana shrimp, perfectly fried with a nicely-seasoned breading.
If you have plenty of time before your flight, this would be a good place to stop near the airport for a quick lunch or dinner. If you want to take home some great Louisiana Seafood, go next door to the Fisherman’s Cove Seafood Market and they will pack up what you want to take with you or ship it.
