Where is St. Rose? Let’s start big and work backwards. It’s in Louisiana, it’s in St. Charles Parish, it’s one of the three parishes of the River Parishes Tourist Commission (also known as New Orleans Plantation Country), it’s on River Road, which butts up against the Mississippi River and, it’s only 19 miles from the French Quarter. I don’t usually go to new restaurants as I want to give them a chance to work out the kinks, but I went and I’m glad I did. The restaurant is Truck Farm Tavern, which opened in October 2015. I had high expectations that Chef Brack May would be serving a great gumbo, but I was wrong. It was Exceptional. They have only one gumbo on their menu and it’s a Smoked Chicken, Turkey Neck and Andouille Gumbo which is served in a cup for only $6.95.
The first thing that hit me was the Gumboroma. It was wonderful and I couldn’t wait to experience my first spoonful. It was probably the best spoonful I’ve tasted and it kept getting better. This is a dark roux gumbo that was served very hot, seasoned perfectly, had a lot of house made andouille and house made smoked chicken. The rice was on the warm side but didn’t have much taste (no biggy). I hope they decide to also serve a bowl of this exquisite Louisiana staple in the future.
