With over 1,400 restaurants in just the Greater New Orleans area, it will be a never-ending search for the Best Gumbo in Louisiana, but the search goes on. A hidden hole-in-the-wall restaurant in Old Metairie, Radosta’s has been serving great local food to mostly locals since 1975 and boy, is it worth the trip!
Try to get there early or late for lunch or you will probably have to wait in line. Grab a table and then decide what you want to eat. Then go to the back counter and place your order. In a short amount of time they will call your name and bring you your food. Go over to the coolers and pick out your drink of choice. When you are done, go up to the front counter give them your name and tell them what you had to drink and pay your bill.
Now, for Radosta’s gumbo: they have only one gumbo and that’s their Louisiana Seafood Gumbo. Cup @ $4.95 and a Bowl @ $8.95. They use a light-medium roux and they use okra, but the okra did not make the gumbo slimy. There was a wonderful fresh-from-the-ocean Gumboroma and when I stirred the gumbo with my spoon there was plenty of good size shrimp. It was served very hot and after the first spoonful, I knew there was going to be a wonderful after burn. I was right. This tastes like the Seafood Gumbo you would find in the heart of Cajun Country. It had a great blend of local seasonings. There was one drawback. That was the rice. It was cold and not cooked completely. I’m guessing that they cook the rice al dente so when they put it in the hot gumbo it will finish cooking and won’t be overcooked. Since I don’t judge rice, I won’t deduct a point (spoon).
Radosta’s has been rated as the #1 Roast Beef Po-Boy in the New Orleans area and I can’t argue with that. Unless you are real hungry, just order a small (7”) Po-Boy. Trust me it’s plenty.
