The Grande Dame Hotel in the French Quarter is called the Hotel Monteleone. The building dates back to 1886 with a 64 room hotel. They kept adding rooms, floors, buildings and now has around 570 rooms. Not just rooms but beautifully appointed rooms and service to match. And, if you are looking for a Haunted Hotel, just step inside the doors and see what happens.
The Hotel Monteleone has gone through a major renovation over the past several years and they’ve created a new restaurant called Criollo which is located on the ground floor, alongside the one and only Carousel Bar. Criollo serves two Louisiana Gumbos at lunch which is their Chicken and Andouille Gumbo and their Seafood Gumbo. At night, they only have the Seafood Gumbo. The gumbo is served in a cup and the cost is $8.00 lunch or dinner. Here is what I found. Their Louisiana Seafood Gumbo has nice size gulf shrimp, crawfish, crabmeat and is served with crispy okra. As you can see in the photo, the cup was filled to the top with plenty of shrimp and big chunks of okra. This is one of the few gumbos that has big chunks of okra. The good news is that the okra was not cooked down so there was no slime factor. There was a good amount of seasoning, but could have used more. There was a nice Gumboroma, and there was a very good after burn. The rice was cool and added no taste to the gumbo. All in all, it was enjoyable and I would go back.
