Can Manning’s Pass the Competition?
This is a series of three New Orleans Saints football stars that have their own restaurants in the Greater New Orleans area. Two were quarterbacks and one was a running back. All three are still New Orleans football icons with the patriarch being Archie Manning.
The three restaurants you will be reading about in coming weeks are:
- Manning’s, New Orleans: Louisiana Chicken and Andouille Gumbo
- Deuce McAllister’s Ole Saint Kitchen & Tap, New Orleans: Gumbo Ya Ya
- Bobby Hebert’s Cajun Cannon Restaurant, Metairie: T Bob’s Seafood Gumbo
In a previous blog, I wrote that I was going to see which sports restaurant in Louisiana serves the Best Gumbo in Louisiana. This is part one of a three-part series on which sports restaurant in New Orleans has the best Gumbo.
Manning’s is located on Fulton Street as part of the Harrah’s Casino but not in the casino. The menu lists a Chicken and Andouille Gumbo served with Popcorn Rice and Green Onions for $7. I asked if that was for a cup and the waiter said “no, it was for a bowl”. The cost for a cup was $4.
Manning’s is located in downtown New Orleans and they only charge $4 for Gumbo!? That has to be the lowest price anywhere.
So how did it taste, you ask? Here is what I found. There were a lot of big pieces of cubed chicken and good size pieces of vegetables but not much Andouille. It had tomato in it which made it more of a creole gumbo. The Gumboroma was just okay, but it did have a good spice level and it left a very good after burn. If I didn’t know better, I would say it did not have a roux base. The consistency and taste was more like a soup than a gumbo. The popcorn rice is a long grain white rice that gets its name because when it cooks it tastes like popcorn. One of my favorites is Stansel’s Gourmet Rice, which may be the original. I’m not sure whose popcorn rice they use at Manning’s or what else they put in it, but it had a strange taste.
If you are a sports fan this is a great place to go. If you are looking for a great Louisiana Gumbo, not so much.
