Does North Louisiana Have the Best Gumbo?

You are probably saying “How can North Louisiana have a great Louisiana Gumbo”? Well you better think again. I went to Herby K’s on the suggestion of a good friend. She told me it was a hole in the wall but it has great food. She was right on both occasions. Finding the place is a challenge unless you have a GPS.

HerbyK collageTheir specialty is the Shrimp Buster. Look at the menu to see what it is. I can tell you it is a must have. Now let’s get to the best part, their Louisiana Gumbo. They have two Louisiana Gumbos on their menu. A Chicken and Sausage Gumbo and a Seafood Gumbo. Their Gumbos come in three sizes (see the photo of the different sizes). A cup is $5.95, a small is $8.95 and a large is $11.95.

I had the Chicken and Sausage Gumbo. As you can see by the photo, there are plenty of large pieces of Louisiana Sausage. You can also see other little things in the photo. They are small pieces of fried okra. What a nice surprise and a great taste. Their gumbo is a very dark roux with a fantastic Gumboroma. The spice level was perfect and left a very good after burn. The only negative was the salt level. There was a lot, but most of it came from the sausage and it didn’t stop me from almost licking the bowl. The rice was hot but tasteless. The owner heard me talking about his gumbo and asked what I thought. I told him it was a little salty and he offered to take it off my check, but I told him no it was wonderful anyway. He then said his seafood gumbo was even better. That will have to wait until next time.
