Who Dat Say They Want Some Louisiana Gumbo?

This is the first in a series of Sports Gumbos. No, it’s not a new Louisiana drink. It’s a review of several sports related restaurants that serve gumbo. Here are some of the places you will read about over the next few months:

Who Dat Cafe doorThe first stop was at the Who Dat Café. If you didn’t know, New Orleans Saints fans are called Who Dats. Now this is not a sports themed restaurant, but the name is. In fact this classic hole in the wall restaurant, located in the Marigny, which is behind the French Quarter, is very eclectic.

They don’t have a Louisiana Gumbo on the menu but serve it as a special on a regular basis. The cost for a good size cup (more like a ramekin) is $5.00 and a bowl is $9.00. Here is what I found. They serve a Chicken and Sausage Gumbo. This gumbo has a medium roux with a great Gumboroma. There were several large pieces of sausage and chicken. This was a thinner gumbo than ones I have tried in the past. It had a bold rich flavor with a great spice level and a perfect after burn. They did have small pieces of okra, but it didn’t make the gumbo slimy. The rice was just so so.
