Can a Small Louisiana Chain Restaurant Serve a Good Gumbo?

New Orleans Hamburger and Seafood Co SignIn previous blogs, I’ve mentioned that I don’t like to eat at national chain restaurants. With the great restaurants all throughout Louisiana, there is no need to subject yourself to a restaurant where the menu and recipes were created in anywhere else USA. Now, there are some examples throughout Louisiana where locals started a restaurant for locals, became successful and opened additional restaurants. That is where the New Orleans Hamburger & Seafood Co. comes in. They opened their first restaurant in 1984 and continued to expand as far as Houma, Louisiana. Most of their restaurants are in the Greater New Orleans area. You place your order with the cashier, pay for it, they give you a number to place on your table and they bring you your food.

Recently, they started to advertise one of the best deals around: a platter that includes a cup of Gumbo, three pieces of thin fried catfish, French fries and a piece of Louisiana toast (most of you know it as Texas toast). The cost is $9.99 and you get a free ice cream cone when you are done. The cost of their City’s Best Gumbo (that’s what they say on the menu) is $5.99 for a cup and $8.99 for a bowl.

New Orleans Hamburger and Seafood Co GumboSo how was it you ask? Well, here is what I found. The gumbo had a medium to light roux with tomatoes and okra. It was on the thicker side and just a little slime factor due to the okra. The Gumboroma was very good as was the spice level, which left a very good after burn. The gumbo had plenty of stuff with good size shrimp and chicken as well as small pieces of sausage. The gumbo was served very hot, which is not always the case. Oh, the rice was just okay. In case you want to know about the catfish, it was good but it lacked seasoning.

Here is a tip: If you don’t see the combo special listed, ask for it. Sometimes they stop advertising it but still offer it if you ask.
