Dockside Seafood and Oyster Bar is located in a small strip shopping center in Harahan which is located in Jefferson Parish, approximately ten miles west of the French Quarter and approximately five miles southeast of the airport.
Dockside serves only one Louisiana Gumbo which is called Paw Paw’s Seafood and Andouille Gumbo. $4.99 for a cup and $6.49 for a bowl. Even though the bowl is not that much more than the cup, stay with the cup, or better yet, order an appetizer instead. I went to Dockside on a Monday which is Red Beans and Rice day in Louisiana (read more about this old Monday tradition here). I decided to order the Red Beans and Rice and the waitress said they haven’t had them for at least three weeks. Hmm. I decided to order a Fried Crawfish Poboy (crawfish is in season and they did have boiled crawfish) and she said they don’t have any fried crawfish. Double Hmm.
So here is what I found with their Gumbo. It had a good Gumboroma with a medium roux. It was served hot, but after a few bites it lacked seasoning (no after burn). There was a good amount of small shrimp, but not a bit of andouille. Their gumbo had a good amount of okra and (all together now) it was slimy. The other problem I had was there were a lot of small bits of shells. I think they should have named it Paw Paw’s Seafood and Shell Gumbo. Oh, the rice was served hot.
