A Very Good Louisiana Gumbo in Metairie

Cello’s Restaurant is approximately 30 years old but it has recently found a new home in Metairie. It’s located behind the main post office and across the street from Lakeside Shopping Center. One of the problems it may have is that it’s not in the mainstream of traffic. One of the problems it doesn’t have is its Chicken, Sausage and Shrimp Louisiana Gumbo.

Cellos GumboTheir gumbo is not served everyday so you may have to call in advance to make sure they will be serving it. As I understand it, they serve different gumbos. You have to go to the register and place your order. The wait staff will bring your meal to you. They charge $4.50 for a cup and $7.50 for a bowl. The gumbo has a dark roux which gave it a great Gumboroma. There was plenty of sausage and chicken but only one small overcooked shrimp. I got a good blast of seasoning in my first spoonful and it kept getting better as I got to the bottom of the cup, which left a very pleasant after burn. The rice added nothing to the taste of the gumbo.

This is a small restaurant that has a big local following but we were welcomed with a big smile as newcomers. The wait staff that brings your food couldn’t be nicer. I ordered the roast beef poboy and it was delicious.
