It’s a good bet that if you go where the locals go when it comes to eating, you will (usually) get a good meal. That’s the case with Big Al’s Seafood Restaurant in Houma. Houma is in Cajun Country and Big Al’s looks like a cajun cabin that should be out on a lake.
Big Al’s Seafood Restaurant serves two Louisiana Gumbos. A Chicken & Sausage at $3.95 for a cup and $6.95 for a bowl, and a Seafood Gumbo at $4.95 for a cup and $7.95 for a bowl. GREAT price for a Very Good Louisiana Gumbo. I had the Chicken & Sausage Gumbo (I know this is a seafood restaurant, but I was in the mood for the C & S) and here is what I found. The gumbo had a dark roux with a good Gumboroma. The gumbo was on the thick side but I couldn’t put my finger (I should say my tongue) on what made it thick. There was plenty of chicken and sausage. The strange thing was that some of the sausage was very soft. The spice level was very good and as you have read in the past, the bottom of the cup had the highest spice level which left a very good after burn. The rice was warm and just okay. I also ordered a shrimp po boy that was good to the last crumb.
