Louisiana Seafood Gumbo at Don’s Seafood

The first Don’s opened in Downtown Lafayette in 1934 and now there are seven Don’s Seafood Restaurants scattered around Louisiana. I visited the one in Metairie, located half way between the New Orleans Airport and The French Quarter.

It turns out that Don’s has a commissary that makes all of its gumbos for all their restaurants. I didn’t ask what else the commissary makes. Don’s serves two different Louisiana Gumbos. Dons Seafood Metairie Seafood GumboThe Chicken and Sausage Gumbo is $5.99 for a cup and $12.99 for a bowl and a Louisiana Seafood Gumbo for $6.25 for a cup and $13.99 for a bowl. They also have a ½ Shrimp Po Boy and a cup of (your choice) gumbo for $10.99. On this trip, I ordered the Seafood Gumbo suggested by the waiter. Here is what I found. The presentation was probably the best part of the Seafood Gumbo.  The gumbo had a very unique aroma. Not the typical Gumboroma that I have found in other restaurants that have great Gumbos. The seafood gumbo was on the dark side, but very watery. It didn’t seem like there was a roux, but the waiter checked and he said it did. It did have a good amount of small shrimp and little pieces of crabmeat. I still couldn’t get over the aroma. I’m not saying it was bad, just very different. The gumbo had a good spice level and it did get spicier towards the bottom of the cup. The rice was served hot but had no taste. The after burn was not a pleasant one.
