There are so many amazing places to visit in Louisiana, whether it’s her culturally diverse cities, historical landmarks, or the amazing parks and nature preserves unique to this great state. One of my favorite cities to spend time in is Lafayette, situated along the Vermillion River right in the heart of Cajun Country.
Talk about a culturally diverse city! Founded by the Acadians in the 19th century, Lafayette is a fascinating blend of French, Spanish, Caribbean, Indian, African and American influences which have come together to form a distinctly Louisiana location.
There is so much to see and do in Lafayette, from exploring the museums and cultural centers (including the must-see Acadian Village, which accurately portrays the way the 19th century settlers lived) to experiencing the lively street fairs and festivals. World-class shopping is also a draw, as is Lafayette’s eclectic music scene.
And then…there’s the food! People come from all over the world to the capital of Cajun Country is to savor the vast selection of Cajun and Creole cuisine that has earned Lafayette the distinction of being named the “Tastiest Town in the South” by Southern Living magazine, and the “Best Food Town” by Rand McNally.
Lafayette’s warm, sub-tropic climate and natural beauty are also major attractions of the area. Here you will find majestic forests interlaced with bayous, marshes and swamps. One of the highlights of my last stay was taking a swamp tour with Pastor Brothers Excursions. (I can see why they were voted “Best in the South” by AAA Southern Traveler Magazine!) What an amazing experience it was, not only breath-taking and informative, but also seasoned with just the right amount of danger. I saw gators, beautiful birds, turtles, fascinating trees and so much more. They offer a variety of tours, so I’m sure you’ll be able to find one that suits your needs…and I highly recommend that you do! I can’t think of a better way to experience Lafayette than floating right through the heart of it!
There are so many wonderful places to visit in Louisiana, but for a real, authentic experience, Lafayette should be at the top of your list!
