What Do Jerry Lee Lewis and Very Good Louisiana Gumbo Have in Common?

Johnnie Maes signThey are both from & in Concordia Parish, Louisiana. Jerry Lee Lewis was born in Ferriday and Johnnie Mae’s Seafood & Grille located in Vidalia, Louisiana serves a very good Louisiana Gumbo.

Johnnie Mae’s is a stone’s throw from the Mississippi River and seems to always be packed with customers. They have one Louisiana Gumbo and, according to their menu, it’s a “deep southern roux-based gumbo with okra, crab and shrimp”. The cost is $5.95 for a cup and $9.95 for a bowl. Here is what I found. The Gumboroma was very good.Johnnie Maes Seafood Gumbo I had to really get my nose close to the cup but it was there. I also noticed they had several pieces of smoked sausage in the gumbo and a large amount of okra. The okra was not my favorite part of the gumbo. The gumbo had a medium color roux, a fair amount of small shrimp and very little crab. It did have a good blend of Louisiana seasoning which left a very pleasant after burn. The biggest negative was it was very salty. The rice was good but as usual didn’t add much to the gumbo.

After your gumbo, why not try one of their hamburgers. I did. It came out with a crusty exterior and pink in the middle. Just the way I like it. It also had frickles (fried pickles), onion strings and fries on an onion bun. This will stay on my must eat places when I get back to the NE Crossroads Region.
