Every city in Louisiana has something special for locals and visitors and Monroe/West Monroe is no exception. Most of you know Monroe/West Monroe from Duck Dynasty, but that’s just a small part of what this area has to offer.
On a recent visit, I took Mrs. Louisiana Travelin’ Man to the Waterfront Grill on beautiful Bayou DeSiard. You have the option of dining outside or inside with big windows overlooking the bayou. You can see by the photo what the view looks like. The restaurant opened on Valentine’s Day in 1997 and quickly became a big hit. The Waterfront Grill has upscale food with a casual atmosphere.
Okay, let’s get to their Louisiana Gumbo. According to their menu, they serve “The finest gumbo on the bayou”. Well, not only is that true but it may be the best Louisiana Gumbo in the area. I still have a few more stops to make to be sure (I know, it’s a tough job). They only serve one gumbo and it’s a shrimp & chicken gumbo at $5.95 for a cup and $8.95 for a bowl. You will find big pieces of chicken, smaller shrimp and okra. The good news is the okra actually added to their great gumbo. The Gumboroma was a homerun and it had a great spice which got bolder towards the bottom of the cup, leaving a great after burn. The rice was just okay.
I usually don’t talk about what else I ate but I must. I ordered their BBQ Shrimp Poboy with 5 jumbo shrimp. If you haven’t had a Louisiana BBQ shrimp dish, you will be surprised at what comes out. It’s all butter, pepper and other spices, not a tomato based BBQ sauce. It is heavenly. They also give you extra sauce to dip.
