As you will read, they don’t have the best Gumbo in Louisiana, but it’s worth the trip.
Brisbi’s is one of the newer restaurants on the Lakefront of New Orleans and as you can see by the picture, they sit high above the ground. Don’t fret. They have an elevator if you don’t want the exercise of walking up about 20 steps.
I ordered the small and here is what I found: the Gumboroma was just okay. This Louisiana Gumbo has a medium roux and a lot of thyme seasoning (the black spots in the gumbo picture are the thyme). You don’t find many Louisiana Gumbos with this much thyme, but it works. The gumbo is also on the thicker side and I’m sure they are using okra as it was just a little slimy. There was an okay amount of small shrimp but very little crabmeat. There were some shrimp shells but not enough to worry about. The overall spice level was fair until you got to the bottom of the bowl. You will feel the heat, but the after burn only lasted for a short period of time. Oh, by the way, the rice was cold and had no taste.
They have a Soup and Salad Combo for $13.00. You get the large Shrimp and Crabmeat Gumbo as well as a ¼ wedge of iceberg lettuce with a bleu cheese vinaigrette dressing. A great deal.
As you can see by the photo of the Shrimp Po Boy, they use Jumbo Shrimp. All the shrimp that was in my gumbo wouldn’t have equaled one of the jumbo shrimp from the po boy. The po boy was good, but almost impossible to eat as a sandwich.
