For those who have read my previous blogs, you know I don’t go to chain restaurants but in New Orleans, there are a few unique chains. One of the best is the John Besh chain of restaurants. John is one of the best chefs in the country and his restaurants are always tops on everyone’s list.
The American Sector is located in one of the most important buildings in New Orleans and in the U.S., The National WWII Museum. The restaurant has three sections: the outdoor patio, the main room and the back room. One of the first things you will experience is the music: The Andrew Sisters, Rosemary Clooney and Count Basie just to name a few.
Now let’s get to the reason for my visit. The Louisiana Gumbo. They serve a Louisiana shrimp and sausage gumbo which the menu says is $8.00. The waiter asked if I wanted a bowl or a cup. The cup price is $4.00 so I ordered the cup. Big mistake. Read on. The gumbo had a darkish roux and was on the thick side. It also had a monster shrimp not bay shrimp you usually get, this was jumbo. It also had a big chunk of Andouille sausage. The gumbo had a great spiciness from spoon one. The after burn was perfect. The rice was cold and bland but that didn’t matter. There was also crunchiness to the trinity (onions, bell peppers and celery). They use ½ chicken base and ½ shrimp base. Add a little Worchestershire and Tabasco and you have the perfect gumbo.
Earlier I said I made a mistake by ordering the cup instead of the bowl. Besides the fact that the gumbo was fantastic, in the bowl you get three jumbo shrimp. It’s a meal.
You can’t just have their fantastic Louisiana Gumbo and leave. You must tour this unbelievable museum to appreciate the contribution Louisiana made in WWII. It will be an unforgettable experience.
