Hill Top Inn Restaurant and Lounge

If you are anywhere between New Orleans and Baton Rouge and want to get out in the country and experience a great local restaurant with great gumbo, head to the Hill Top.
The Hill Top Inn is located in Livingston Parish very close to Ascension Parish off of LA 22. It dates back to 1967 but the current owners have had it for the past 9 years.
It’s a family restaurant with a great country feel. I was able to taste both their Crab and Shrimp Gumbo and their Chicken and Andouille Gumbo. Both are $5.95 for a cup and $7.95 for a bowl.
First the Crab and Shrimp Gumbo. I’ll cut to the chase. It was one of the best gumbos I’ve tasted. It smelled wonderful and had a medium roux look. It was served very hot and had plenty of shrimp and lots of small pieces of crab. The seasoning was perfect and kept building as I got to the bottom. This did not have any tomato or okra and didn’t need either. The rice was served warm, but as usual it didn’t add anything to the gumbo, but there wasn’t much you could do to make it better.
Now for the Chicken and Andouille Gumbo. I found out that the Andouille was from a local company and had a great smoky taste. The look was very good and it smelled like a dark roux, but it was a medium roux. There was plenty of chicken and andouille to fill you up. The gumbo was served very hot and the spiciness left a very good after-burn. Same rice as the Crab and Shrimp gumbo. If I had to choose the better one, it would be the Crab and Shrimp Gumbo.
